Jimmie Johnson Wins Cup Race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

Jimmie Johnson made it two in a row winning the Shelby American at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday passing Jeff Gordon in the closing laps for the win.

Gordon dominated the race, leading a race high 218 laps but only took two tires while Johnson took four and that prevailed to the victory. Gordon would finish third and  Kevin Harvick finished second after a win in the Nationwide race Saturday as well as a second place finish last weekend at Fontana.

The RCR cars are back and Harvick looks really strong so far.

Kurt Busch started on the pole and on lap two the caution came out for Kevin Conway who spun off turn two. On lap 47, Mike Bliss looked to have cut a tire and crashed but would make it back out later.

NASCAR seemed to have a issue at the track as there were two caution periods for problems with the caution lights. Bobby Labonte lost a rear end and had to go to the garage, which they got fixed and he got back out by lap 59.

Aric Almirola and Michael McDowell had taken there cars to the garage and Joe Nemechek would follow along with Boris Said.

Bliss eventually retired from the race and on lap 80 Sam Hornish Jr. spun off turn four which brought the caution out again.

This was a good race at Vegas. The weather was nice, the track was slick, and on lap 94, Jamie McMurray got loose going into turn four and slid up into Juan Pablo Montoya. They crashed, collecting the pole winner Kurt Busch.

Matt Kenseth had to come to pit road on lap 121 when he thought he had a loose wheel. There were a lot of pit road issues—mainly drivers speeding.

With 39 laps to go Conway spun for a second time, bringing out the final pit stop of the day, which is when Johnson took four tires to Gordon's two. then Johnson passed Gordon with less than 10 laps to go to take the win.

Here is the top 10 from Las Vegas as the Cup series heads east to Atlanta Motor Speedway next Sunday for the Kobalt Tools 500, where Kurt Busch held off Jeff Gordon to win that race one year ago.
