Miguel Cotto Vs. Antonio Margarito: A Disappointing Aftermath

Miguel Cotto was left bloody following his loss to Antonio Margarito and immediately hospitalized. Margarito on the other side was thrilled with his long-desired career defining fight and said “El tornado llego para quedarse.” (The Tornado was here to stay.) 

I sat back and was thrilled; we had just witnessed one of the best fights in recent years. Both champions showed why they were considered the best, fighting with heart and tenacity.

Furthermore, I was already looking forward to an epic rematch and I figured both Margarito and Cotto would continue to be future stars of boxing.

Man was I on cloud nine.

It seemed both fighters left everything in the ring and beat the prime out of each other. Margarito, despite being the winner, had a severe swollen face and Cotto was, like I mentioned, immediately taken to the hospital.

Unfortunately, the aftermath of that fight was quite disappointing.

Margarito fought Shane Mosley down the road and lost. Not only did the hype of a Cotto/Margarito rematch wane down, but Margarito was caught with a plaster like substance.

Perhaps, indicating that he might have used that same substance on Cotto. Yet, we will never be 100 percent sure.

Margarito hasn’t fought since, doesn’t have anyone really clamoring for his return, and has forever tarnished his legacy.

Cotto on the other hand went on to win a dubious decision against Joshua Clottey, faced current P4P king Manny Pacquiao, and lost by TKO.

Cotto plans to move up in weight and challenge Yuri Foreman. Nevertheless, he has repeated that he plans to retire soon.

I find it disappointing that such fighters who were deemed to have very promising years down the road seem to have their best years behind them.

This is boxing, a cruel sport inside and outside the ring.
