Thoughts From The First WWE NXT Show.

The Doctor Chris MuellerFeb 24, 2010

Last night on SyFy, WWE debuted it's new show NXT.  The show focuses on eight young rookies being mentored by eight superstars.

First and foremost, Bryan Danielson, now going by Daniel Bryan made it known that he is not happy being paired with the Miz.  The thing I was surprised about is how much WWE announcers talked about his time in the independent circuit.

WWE has made a habit out of ignoring the fact that other promotions exist, so for them to talk about it at all is a step in the right direction.  Bryan showed his nerves were not made of steel during his promo and match with Jericho.

His promo started off a little weak, but with some heel heat from Miz it eventually got better.  I hope these two face off against each other sooner than later.

I like that WWE paired him with a guy like Jericho for his first match.  It showed some of his ability to keep up with a world class wrestler, however some of the match had a strange feel to it.

Bryan is used to a faster pace than WWE usually has so he looked like he was no-selling moves.  He also had a few missteps, like Jericho hitting an enziguri to Bryan's back and Bryan falling backwards instead of forwards.

His use of submission was nice to see, but overall you could tell he was very nervous going into his first mainstream match.  Miz did a great job of playing the heel to Bryan's babyface role.

I doubted the two being paired up, but now I see why WWE did it.  Miz is a great mic man and he can help Bryan add that skill to his bag of tricks.

Heath Slater reminded me of a ginger haired version of Zack Ryder.  He was cocky, arrogant, and he didn't impress all that much in his first outing.  Pairing anyone with Christian will help them so I guess the pairing of the two was a good choice.

The two faced Carlito and his rookie Michael Tarver.  I have high hopes for Tarver, he has the look and style of a future superstar.  He is kind of like the black Marc Mero, but better.

David Otunga faced off against Darren Young in a match that I can only describe as bland.  The two guys both wanted to look good and I think that prevented them from making the other guy look good too.  I hope they have better showings next week.

The lack of a certain wrestler in the line up has me a bit confused.  I thought a few months back I heard that Low-Ki would be debuting as Kaval for this show, but it is possible the WWE has other plans for him.  A Mysterio feud has been tossed around as an idea for him.

Michael Cole has turned into a heel announcer it would seem as he bashed the IWC last night on the show.  He was going back and forth with Josh Matthews about Daniel Bryan's accolades.  Matthews was hyping Bryan while Cole was claiming to have never heard of him.

Cole seemed pissed off in a very real way so if this was a work he did a great job.  Matthews always seems to argue with his co-announcers these days.  I am glad the WWE finally talks about the independent scene rather than saying Bryan is new to wrestling.

My hope for NXT is that we see CM Punk face Bryan at some point in an ROH reunion match.  I know WWE will never talk about their time in ROH, but the fans will know.

I am still confused on if the show has a point system or how it is going to work as far as the competition aspect is concerned.  The lack of two of the rookies on the show gives us something to look forward to next week.

In closing I am going to say this, I originally thought the pairing of Miz and Bryan was a bad idea, but after last night's show I understand and support the decision to pair them up together.

What did you think of WWE's first NXT broadcast?
