Dolphins' Keys to a Successful 2010 Season

Chris FarrellFeb 22, 2010

The Miami Dolphins are getting there but still aren't quite there. Last season's final game against the Steelers summarized the entire season, injuries killed the Dolphins. The early season injury of Chad Pennington set-back the entire 2009 season and now leaves us wondering what to do in order to improve next year.

To start the Phins' need a true #1 receiver. Ginn is fast and is a great returner but doesn't have the hands or big-catch ability to be a great number one. Camarillo and Bess are improving quickly but are not reliable enough to be a quarterback's first option. This whole receiving corp is young and talented but they need a solid veteran to take over and show them the ropes.

Next, Miami needs a solid pass-rushing linebacker. Parcells has already addressed the run-stopping portion by signing Canada's defensive player of the year, MLB Cameron Wake. With Jason Taylor on the end, a quick blitzing OLB could cause mayhem in the backfield for opposing quarterbacks. The nose tackle position is also weak, and a big ole' hole plugger in the center of that defensive line could do wonders to further this defense's run stopping ability.

Finally, the re-signing of free agents will be key to a successful season. Vernon Carey, starting right tackle, is probably the best lineman on that front and his re-signing will impact everything that happens on draft day and next season. Three out of the four starting corners for the Phin's are also free agents. None of these guys are Pro Bowl players but they too will have an impact on what the Dolphins do with their draft picks. Some fresh blood at the cornerback position may be for the better as all of the current starters are over 30.

All in all the Dolphins have a bit of work to do, but most of the goals for next season are very much within reach. This provides us with much optimism for a great Dolphin season next year.
