The Greatest U.S. Winter Olympian Ever: Apolo Ohno or Bonnie Blair?

Jo-Ryan SalazarFeb 20, 2010

The Americans incessantly adore him. The Koreans incessantly despise him. Either way you look at him, he's still Federal Way, Washington's very own Apolo Anton Ohno. And oh no, the man some people refer to as "Chunky" got another Olympic medal, surpassing long track superstar Bonnie Blair for the most medals by a American Winter Olympian.

Tonight, at the Pacific Coliseum, in between frozen tangos and more frozen tangos, Apolo Anton Ohno earned bronze in the men's 1,000 meters. South Korea's Lee JUng-Su took home his second gold of the games while countryman Lee Ho-Suk took home the silver.

With a medal in the 5,000 meter relay or the 500 meters, Ohno has a chance to not only make it nine medals, but ten.

And this bronze medal is just part of a burgeoning collection of medals which include three golds and a silver at the 1999 World Junior Championships in Montreal, and a healthy mix of metal pendants from the his World Championship campaigns (nine golds, seven silvers, seven bronzes).

This brings up the big million-dollar question during these 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games: Between Bonnie Blair and Apolo Anton Ohno, who is the greatest American Winter Olympian?

It's a question worth pondering. A question worth taking a side on. And a question worth debating.

Surely with the collection Ohno has garnered, he deserves to be the best America can bring at an Olympic Winter Games. But for those who believe that quality outweighs quantity, Blair still prevails with her triumphs in Calgary, Albertville and Lillehammer.

But we want to know what you think. Who is the greatest Winter Olympian from the USA: Apolo Anton Ohno or Bonnie Blair?

Let the debating begin!
