Maryland's Cliff Tucker Hits Game Winning 3 Pointer

Al Hondo HandyFeb 20, 2010

Maryland's Cliff Tucker took the pass with 1.5 seconds remaining in the game, with his team down 74-73, and hit a 3 pointer to give the Terps a thrilling 76-74 victory.

With seconds remaining, Greivis Vasquez hit a jumper to give Maryland a 73-72 lead.  Seconds later Derrick Favors scores to give Georgia Tech a 74-73 lead with 3 seconds remaining.  Vasquez took the pass dribbled to half court and hit what looked like a winning 3 pointer, however Coach Gary Williams had called time out.

The officials checked the clock and gave Maryland 1.5 seconds.  When Tucker hit the game winner he just kept running and so did his teammates.  The win keep the Terps undefeated in ACC play at home.  The Terps are now 19-7 and in second place in the ACC with a record of 9-3.

Leading the Terps was Vasquez with 18 points and 9 assist.  Vasquez also scored his 2000 point.  Teammate Eric Hayes had a great game with 15, followed by Jordan Williams with 9 points and 12 rebounds.  This was a great team win as Dino Gregory also added 9, buzzer beater Tucker finished with 8, Adrian Bowie had 6 and Landon Milbourne only scored 5, but had 7 rebounds and 2 key blocks.

Georgia Tech was led by Derrick Favors with 21 points and 18 rebounds.  He played an outstanding game, for a freshman.  Iman Shumperet had 17 and Gani Lawal added 12.

In what was almost an evenly matched game throughout, it was a shame to see either team loose.

From the field Georgia Tech shot 41.2 and Maryland shot 43.1.  From the 3 point line Tech shot 46.7 and the Terps 36.4.  The teams made 11 and 12 free throws, respectively.  Tech finished with 45 rebounds and Maryland had 38.

The difference in the game may have been the bench scoring and points on turnovers. Maryland recorded 23 bench points, compared to 13 from Tech.  Maryland scored 17 on turnovers, while George Tech only had 6.

Georgia Tech is now 18-9 and 6-7 in the ACC.
