How Much More Overrated Can Lindsey Jacobellis Get?

Jo-Ryan SalazarFeb 16, 2010

You know, I have seen many female athletes have the looks, but not the talent to deliver in the clutch.

There's tennis pretender Anna Kournikova. There's the underachieving Danica Patrick, who's more famous for her GoDaddy.com exploits during Super Bowl Sunday. And a certain figure skater by the name of Michelle Kwan and her string of bad luck in the form injuries leaves much to be desired

Then there is the tragedy of snowboard cross shortcomer Lindsey Jacobellis. And I mention this with an embarrassed chuckle and a palm to my face.

It's one thing to blow apart your opportunity at earning a gold at a Winter Olympics. It's another to be stupidly over-hyped by NBC to get redemption, only to falter in the semis and settle for racing in the Small Final.

Now I don't understand why there even exists such a thing as a "Small Final." I guess the snowboarding gods were just sympathetic to her plight that they decided to restore any dignity she had left, blonde curls and all.

But Lindsey, Lindsey, Lindsey. With today's outing, you put yourself in the long line of CWS athletes. CWS stands for "Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda." The cruel reality that you ruined a chance to redeem yourself in the event you love is the hypocrisy that will sadly leave a stain on your record till the day you die.

I will be, however in her defense just for a little bit (and ONLY for a little bit): none of the USA's snowboarders today had the savvy and skill of Seth Wescott.

Instead of an American and two athletes from francophone countries, all three athletes that will take the podium tonight are all from francophone countries: Canada's Maelle Ricker gets gold, France's Deboara Anthonoz with silver, Switzerland's Olivia Nobs gets bronze with Norway's Helene Olafsen shut out of the podium.

But that's as far as I will go with defending an overly-touted boarder that underachieved on the slopes of Cypress Mountain. With this performance, the verdict is out: Lindsey Jacobellis is simply overrated.

Here's hoping that the Flying Tomato doesn't turn into a rotten tomato on the halfpipe.
