Hold onto Your Hats Because Adamek vs. Arreola Almost Set for April 24
According to sources, Tomasz Adamek (40-1 27 KO) vs. Chris Arreola (28-1 25 KO) is almost a done deal for April 24. HBO will be carrying the fight, with the opener being Alfredo Angulo vs. Joel Julio. Sources say a press conference may happen as soon as early Friday morning in Los Angeles. They will fight at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California.
This is a very intriguing fight on many levels. Adamek has had some fights at heavyweight, but nothing serious yet, as he has beat Andrew Golota (KO 5) and won a unanimous decision against Jason Estrada. He didn’t look great in beating Estrada but few fighters ever look good against the slick former Olympian.
Arreola is coming off a fight where he KO'ed Brain Minto. He looked good in dominating the smaller Minto but this fight was purely a bounce-back fight. In his previous fight, he lost to Vitali Klitschko in a bid to win the WBC title. He was thoroughly dominated in that fight and looked like an overmatched opponent against the much larger Klitschko.
This fight is interesting because it is the first real test at heavyweight for Adamek, the style matchup is great, and it will provide fireworks for as long as it lasts. Both fighters come straight ahead and aren’t afraid to take a punch to land one. They both have solid chins and above average power.
The winner of this fight will be in line for a shot at the heavyweight title, so both will be giving their all. I personally like both fighters and am going to hate to see one of them lose, but my prediction is Adamek via late KO. Arreola is a good fighter with a good punch, but his chin will be his undoing.
This fight is going to be whoever has the better chin and if you have seen Adamek fight you know he has a granite chin. I also see Adamek's conditioning playing a part later in the fight. Adamek doesn't stop pressing and Arreola needs to show up in shape or he is going to fade late.
This is a fight that the heavyweight division (and boxing) needs badly as it should thrust the heavyweight division into the spotlight for a moment. Hopefully the winner of this fight can generate some interest in the otherwise dull division and win an alphabet title and give us some good heavyweight fights.
