A Look At: The Junior Welterweight Division Episode 1

Fight Fan ForeverFeb 15, 2010

The Jr. Welterweight Division is currently a division packed with future stars and a division that could soon take over as the best division, if it hasn’t already.

Despite Manny Pacquiao being the lineal lightweight champion, he has made it clear he will not drop down in weight, so he shouldn’t be a factor.

So let’s take a look at its major players and what we should look for them in the upcoming boxing schedule.

Timothy Bradley

This could be Bradley’s breakout year if he manages his career wisely.

He is slowly creeping into the pound-for-pound rankings and has earned his place as the top Jr. welterweight of the world. He has solid wins against veterans such as Junior Witter, Kendall Holt, and Nate Campbell.

I thoroughly believe he is the best, and only an elite boxer can take away his precious 0 from his record.

Up next: He has nothing scheduled but his team has said that they would love a fight against Edwin Valero, an exciting match with boxing next superstar implications.

Amir Kahn

Kahn was able to turn around his career by moving up in weight and winning a Jr. Welterweight title.

I keep hearing he is going to face either Marcos Rene Maidana or Juan Manuel Marquez. Either fight is good in my book and should be a good one.

Kahn, like Bradley, possesses everything to have a breakout year and become an elite fighter, as many predicted he would.

Of course questions still linger about his chin but let’s hope he can prove his critics wrong.

Marcos Rene Maidana

Maidana got the attention of fight fans by making Victor Ortiz quit. Maidana could continue the hot streak he is in if he can land another major fight and knock out his opponent.

Just for fun, wouldn’t it be awesome if Maidana fought against Edwin Valero?

Devon Alexander

Alexander also entered into the Jr. Welterweight rankings by thoroughly beating Junior Witter and making him quit in his stool.

He has a fight scheduled against Juan Urango which is a solid but limited opponent that could be a good add onto his resume.

Other notable fighters that could impact the division:

Ricky Hatton

Paulie Malignaggi

Juan Urango

Victor Ortiz

Some fights that I would love to see:

Maidan vs. Hatton

Bradley vs. Kahn

Alexander vs. Victor Ortiz

Diaz vs. Malignaggi III…aw just kidding hope you enjoyed the read!
