Fantasy UFC Tournament: Welterweight Division, Final Round

Jessy MorrisFeb 8, 2010

They say the more things change, the more they stay the same. After compiling the results of the welterweight semi-finals, those words could not be any more accurate. The lightweight winner of last year's tournament was Sean Sherk who didn't even make it past the first round this year.

In the welterweight tournament, Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves battled it out last year and now will do so again this year.

Here are the official results:

Jon Fitch advances to the finale with a 10-5 vote over Dan Hardy.

Thiago Alves does the same, also with a 10-5 vote over Josh Koscheck.

Finale Fight: Jon Fitch vs Thiago Alves

Last year, these two great fighters battled it out in the finale of the welterweight division. Thiago Alves won the tournament, but that was after Fitch was destroyed by GSP at UFC 87 and before Alves fought GSP at UFC 100.

Now that both men have been dominated by the current champion, it's time to see who gets the win this time. This finale could possibly come at a better time considering Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves will rematch in real life at UFC 111.

Thiago Alves hasn't fought since the loss to St-Pierre at UFC 100 so who knows in what state of mind he'll be in?

Jon Fitch, on the other hand, has looked great since losing at UFC 87, winning all his fights.

Alves has proved to be a great fighter and especially a dangerous striker with great takedown defense. Fitch has been improving his strikes but he's still far from Alves in the striking departement, but he makes it up with great wrestling skills and a lot of heart.

The first fight these two men had saw Jon Fitch take Alves down and eventually pound him out for the win. It's safe to say that both men have improved since, but who will win the rematch at UFC 111 and who will be the winner of the fantasy welterweight tournament?

Next week, the middleweight tournament begins, and with the results from UFC 109, should shake things up quite a bit. Also next week, the winner of the welterweight tournament will be announced so check it out.
