Should Arsenal Now Put All Their Emphasis on the Champions League?

Callum D'SouzaFeb 7, 2010

Three weeks ago, Arsenal was on top of the Premier League and looking like a side that was capable of breaking Arsenal's frustrating four-year trophy drought. But, since bowing out of the FA Cup in the Fourth Round to a doughty Stoke side, Arsenal has failed to grasp onto a win in three league games.

During the three game winless streak, Arsenal has drawn a goalless encounter with Aston Villa, performed horridly against Manchester United in a 3-1 loss and yesterday suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Chelsea, the league leaders.

Arsenal now sit in third place in the League table, nine points adrift of leaders Chelsea and seven behind second place United. Every one has written Arsenal off for the Premier League Trophy and after failing to make impacts in the League and FA Cup, Arsenal appears to only have one option left for a piece of silverware, a competition Wenger and Arsenal have failed to win since their introductions-the Champions League.

Arsenal easily progressed past the group stages earlier this season and now face Portuguese giants FC Porto in the round of 16. Porto are a talented side, easily capable of being the underdogs of the elusive European Championship.

Arsenal performed strongly last season in Europe by finishing fourth. The Gunners were knocked out in the semis by rival, Manchester United. Arsene Wenger has admitted his men enjoy Champions League clashes, because they tend to be less physical.

Arsenal is not entirely out of the title race, but it will take an outstanding effort and a few errors from United and Chelsea, for Arsenal to claim the EPL title. So does Wenger now put all the emphasis on the Champions League?

Arsenal certainly is capable of winning their first ECL title. If they can manage to make the semis, the likes of Robin van Persie and Eduardo would return and Arsenal could boast a relatively fully fit side.

It could be a reasonable gamble which could see the Gunners win their first Champions League trophy. So should Arsene Wenger turn his attention solely to the ECL?
