SUPER SAINTS SUPER PLAYS

Kurt MewsFeb 7, 2010

Congrats to The Saints for their awesome year and their terrific win.

They key play?  Really The Saints had two key plays; and no it wasn't the 6 pick or a dropped pass, or the steady play of Brees. These were the two key plays;

1.  END OF THE FIRST HALF FIELD GOAL:   The Saints following one of the best and memorable goal line stances in Super Bowl history came away empty when they were literally inches away from a tie after trailing early 10-0.  It seemed as if the motivation flipped back into Indy's favor. The Saints controlled most the 2nd quarter, and could of allowed INDY to run out the clock heading into the locker room with a disappointing 7 point deficit. However, New Orlean's held Indy to a 3 and out, including a fine defensive play on 3rd and short. With only 35 seconds left in the half, the Brees lead offense marched the ball nearly half way across the field to set up for a Field Goal.  While it didn't tie the score, it kept the momentum in their favor and mentally narrowed The Colts lead to only 4.

2. BEGINNING OF THE SECOND HALF:  At the beginning of the 2nd half, The Saints shocked not only The Colts, but the massive viewing audience which just got done watching 'The Who' and another blitz of commericals.  They went for an onside kick, the first ever before the 4th quarter in Super Bowl history.  Before one knew it, the scrum on the field lead to New Orleans getting the ball.  It was equally significant that they got the ball and they kept Manning and his offense off the field.  Mentally Peyton and the Colts were expecting their coveted 2nd half possession and regain control of the game. Instead, NO ran nearly 5 minutes off the clock, kept Indy's D on the field, took the lead, and made a clear statement that this was going to be a dog fight.  Instead of taking control and dictating the game, Indianapolis found themselves in an unexpected position of TRAILING and The Saint's confidence surged!

No doubt there were other key plays; a 2 point conversion, offensive pass interference, and others that lead to New Orlean's first Super Bowl victory! But clearly these two plays DEFINED The Saint's attitude and set the tone for the 2nd half in which they outscored The Colts 25-7 on way to The NFL Title!  Congrats to The Super Saints with the 'Super Plays' and the party's on!!
