Chael Sonnen Calls out Silva

Mike HyjurickFeb 7, 2010

After UFC 109, Chael Sonnen is the official contender for the Middleweight belt and will take on the winner of Silva vs. Belfort.  Chael Sonnen won a big fight against the very talented Nate Marquardt.  The outspoken superstar has already made his voice heard on who he wants to fight for the title.  Shockingly however he wants to fight Anderson Silva.  His reasons might be unexpected to maybe everyone who watches UFC.  He stated in an interview "I Hope Anderson wins because I think Vitor is a lot tougher fighter, if I have to choose between the two, I'm going to take the low road and choose the easier opponent.  I really do mean it.  Vitor Belfort, in truth, has really never lost a fight.  The blueprint to beat Vitor is out there, but it's not to stand up with him.  I am picking Vitor."

I truly have respect for both Vitor Belfort and Anderson Silva, however saying that Belfort is straight up better than  Anderson Silva is mind blowing.  Silva has been champion since November of 2006 when he won it against Rich Franklin at UFC 64.  In his run as champion, he has beaten many greats like Dan Henderson and the person who was defeated by Chael Sonnen at UFC 109, Nate Marquardt.

Silva is easily one of the best pound for pound fighters out there and has been undefeated in the UFC since he first got started.  Chael Sonnen is showing his respect for Belfort, but saying straight up that he can beat Silva is going to be a big mistake on his part.  Especially saying this after Silva's last fight where he manhandled Forrest Griffin with the first round KO.

I understand that Chael Sonnen is confident in his chances, however he is on the dangerous edge between confident and cocky.  Anderson Silva is champion for a reason, and will certainly use this to motivate him not only in his fight against Vitor Belfort, but in his possible match up with Sonnen if he is able to beat Belfort.  Needless to say whoever wins at UFC 112 for the middleweight title, Chael Sonnen will have his hands full against either one.
