Super Bowl XLIV Halftime Show: The Who's Anticipated Song List

Bob WarjaFeb 6, 2010

While many young people have lamented yet another "old" rock act entertaining at halftime of the Super Bowl, this year's act is truly legendary and worthy of such a distinction, in my humble opinion.

So what will this Hall of Fame rock band play at the game? Apparently, it's a "mashup" of "Pinball Wizard," "Who Are You," "Baba O'Riley," "Won't Get Fooled Again," and the finale to "Tommy."

Recent years' acts have included Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty, which has delusioned some of the younger generation, and left them wondering, what about us?

But many of the baby boomers, among them NFL Commish Roger Goodell, appreciate the linkage to the past. And let's face it, the NFL knows who has the most disposable income.

Meanwhile, The Who may be rock's greatest live band ever. While the Rolling Stones have anointed themselves as "The World's Greatest Rock-n-Roll Band," many prefer The Who's live performances.

According to The Independent , "2010 will see new performances of The Who's 1973 'mod opera' Quadrophenia and possibly the recording of a new Who album based on Townshend's current work-in-progress, 'Floss.'"

So it's not as if the band is entirely just a memory from our past. And it even has a slight edginess to it, as guitarist Pete Townsend had child-pornography charges brought against him in 2003.

From a pure sports fans perspective, this may not matter. But look, everything that is part of the Super Bowl experience (from the halftime show to the commercials) enhance the enjoyment for many spectators.

Likewise, it would be naive to suggest that only us hardcore football fans watch this game.

So it does matter. And if it doesn't matter to you, don't worry. I hear there is a football game being played on Sunday, as well.
