#2 Villanova Wildcats Suffer First Big East Loss To #8 Georgetown Hoyas

Isaiah JensenFeb 6, 2010

The Villanova Wildcats went into Washington D.C. today looking to take down the Georgetown Hoyas.  Little did the Wildcats know, the Hoyas have been playing great basketball as of late and nothing changed in tonight’s game.  With an absolute dominate first half, the Hoyas ended up walking away with a 103-90 victory over the #2 Villanova Wildcats.

Today’s matchup between these two Big East powerhouses was a must watch game for many college basketball fans.  And all the hype leading up to today’s game was no disappointment.  Leading the game for the Hoyas with a combined 49 points on the night was Austin Freeman putting up 25 and Jason Clark had his new career high with 24 points shooting 6 of 7 from beyond the ark.  These two young men were the anchors for the Hoyas during today’s game.

Georgetown opened today’s game with a dominating first half; they entered the locker room with a 50-31 lead.  This was the worst the Wildcats have played all season.  And although the Hoyas were outscored in the second half, it did not matter one bit.  The closest Villanova climbed was within ten.  From there they could climb no more.

Due to Georgetown’s monster lead at halftime, the Wildcats were forced to commit foul after foul during the second half.  More than half of the Georgetown Hoyas points in the second half came from the free throw line.  In all, they shot 39-50 and were lead from the line by Greg Monroe who went 11-14 in total.

The Hoyas played one of their greatest games thus far this season.  They are now posting a 17-5 overall record.  This was their biggest win this season hands down.  If Georgetown was not being talked about before today, then I really believe today’s win over the #2 Villanova Wildcats will get people to start talking.  The Hoyas are a force that must be reckoned and handing Villanova just there first Big East loss of the season is a giant leap towards a possible Final Four or Championship run come this March.
