The Mardi Gras Massacre

Alex OlivaFeb 6, 2010

With the Saints in the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras right around the corner the whole state of Louisiana is a rockin’. Well in Baton Rouge they were getting ready for their own Super Bowl. The Wildcats were coming to town.

With the loss to South Carolina only 11 days behind us it seems like old news, but it became fresh in my mind as the Wildcats started their game against LSU. With four minutes gone the ‘Cats were down by six and were on the road. Then we got a basket from John Wall, a big slam from Boogie (DeMarcus Cousins) and the onslaught commenced.

When the buzzer went off after the first twenty minutes the ‘Cats had the game well in hand. Cousins played 11 minutes and had 15 points and nine rebounds; he is a monster that almost no one can handle.

Clicking on all cylinders the ‘Cats never looked back in the first half.

As the second half begins I was wondering what it was like to watch a thirty something point comeback. So I called up my dad and asked him about the Mardi Gras Miracle. He said they just kept chipping away at the Tiger lead. Does that sound familiar? With that same sequence happening to us many times this year you never know what could happen.

This team is different though; they have the drive to get the job done. They are not going to let this caliber of team back in the mix. As the game progressed, even with a massive lead, they still executed very well. Playing hard, not sloppy never taking their foot off the throat.

These Tigers never had a chance.

Kentucky-LSU 81-55

After watching the play of Cousins today I think we can put him in the short list of candidates for the player of the year award, nationally and in the SEC. Today he had 19 points in only 20 min of play, and with 13 rebounds he has found his stride. If this kind of play continues he will be the player of the year when it’s all said and done. No disrespect to Wall but Cousins is closing down the stretch with speed and style.
