Hank Steinbrenner, New York Yankees Back in the News

Initially I didnโ€™t plan to post this because there is no real news here, but itโ€™s just under two weeks before Spring Training starts and this weekend is the Super Bowl so there isnโ€™t a whole lot out there.

An AP reporter caught up with Hank Steinbrenner , who has flown under the radar ever since his failed bid to trade for Johan Santana a couple of years ago. Big Hank likes the moves that the Yankees have made this winter and doesnโ€™t think anybody should worry about Derek Jeter next off season.

On the Vazquez and Granderson trade : โ€œThe two trades that Brian did I was really pleased with and very proud of,โ€ Steinbrenner said Thursday. โ€œI think that is going to make a big difference for us. We needed another top-notch starter and got one.โ€

On Jeterโ€™s contract expiring after 2010: โ€œWeโ€™ll get into all of that eventually, โ€ Steinbrenner said. โ€œJeterโ€™s place in Yankee history is obvious, so I think you can pretty much assume from there.โ€

I think most of us realized that Jeter will be taken care of. Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera were taken care of the last time they were up for free agency and Jeter will be no exception. I think heโ€™ll be able to ask for and get almost whatever he wants. Personally Iโ€™d like to see them get creative and offer him a lifetime services contract of some type. That way he can get paid and possibly make the team more financially flexible at the same time.

As for Big Hankโ€™s opinion of the trade, there isnโ€™t a whole lot to hate especially if you are not a big baseball guy like Hank. The Yankees got a very good pitcher and a possibly better outfielder for Melky Cabrera and a bunch of minor leaguers. Obviously they were some talented minor leaguers, but if you are not big on prospects thatโ€™s a great offseason.

See, not really big news. Although it is interesting to hear from Hank for the first time in nearly two years. Do you think this could be a sign that he could be taking a more active role again?
