Notre Dame FB: Sack Charlie Weis
How Charlie Weis remains employed after Saturday is a mystery.
Weis is feverishly trying to obtain the second most notable record in Notre Dame history, which would be for most losses in a single season.
Most fans still want to blame Ty Willinghamโs recruiting for this debacle. This article is in no way attempting to state that Willingham did a better job than Weis hasโbut the fact remains that the Irish are in disarray.
Sorry Weis supporters, but the Naval Academy doesn't have any blue-chip recruits.
What has Charlie accomplished at Notre Dame? He was generously rewarded with a multimillion dollar contract for coming close to beating USC back in 2005.
What coach gets more mileage from a loss then Weis?
Weis has managed to secure a number of impressive ND records this year, including worst opening-day loss ever (33-3 to Georgia Tech); worst start ever (0-5); worst loss to USC (38-0); and worst home loss in 51 years (38-0 to USC).
The coach has stated that everyone should get their laughs in now. College football fans aren't even laughing anymoreโthey're starting to feel sorry for Notre Dame.
Charlie gets outmaneuvered every Saturdayโand not just by the likes of Pete Carroll and Lloyd Carr. Weis can still laud himself for the fact that he was the first ND coach in 10 years to win in Ann Arborโbut even that 2005 victory should be questioned, because Mike Hart left the game with an injury after the first quarter.
Weis likes to compare himself to Bill Belichick and Bill Parcells, but he's yet to back it up. Charlie is starting to rival Bob Davies and Gerry Faust as the worst ND coach of all timeโand neither of them ever lost to Navy.
I have a hard time seeing the Irish turning it around any time soon. Charlie has the No. 1 recruiting class in the country at this point, but come February many of his best prospects could decommit.
That said, Weis also has over six years remaining on his contractโso Irish fans had better get use to him.ย
