Is Rio Ferdinand the Right Choice for Being the Next Captain of England?

Andrew JordanFeb 5, 2010

After some extremely stunning news that John Terry has lost his captaincy for the English National Team due to an affair with former Chelsea and current English teammate Wayne Bridge's ex-girlfriend, Rio Ferdinand has become the captain of the English National Team.

For Ferdinand, he appeared to be the next captain of England when Capello first took over in 2007, but Terry was able to become the captain of England and Ferdinand became the vice captain.

For Ferdinand, he is a player that deserves to have this opportunity with three World Cups under his belt, 76 caps for England and being one of the best defenders of the 2000's.

But now with Ferdinand's appointment, one must wonder if the right decision was made.

For starters, Ferdinand has been a player that has a questionable past with the obvious suspension in 2004 for failing to attend a drug test and instead to go shopping. The incident caused Ferdinand to miss eight months of competitive football for Manchester United, along with missing the European Championship that year due to suspension.

After that, Ferdinand remained a constant performer for England and has been the captain of Manchester United in recent seasons, along with Ryan Giggs due to the injuries to Gary Neville.

But in 2008, Ferdinand lost his potential England captaincy to Terry and has since not been the player that he used to have been.

This is extremely apparent this season, with many nagging injuries that have caused Ferdinand to play in only six Premier League matches for Man United this year and has caused Ferdinand's potential spot on the English team in South Africa to be in question.

Now, he is facing a potential four match ban, after an incident with Hull City forward Craig Hagan in a match in January and we still don't exactly know how well Ferdinand will be come June.

So, with that in mind, is Ferdinand the right man to be leading the national team?

There are other players such as Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, former England captain David Beckham and even Man United teammate Wayne Rooney that could be the new captain of England, but Capello is going with Ferdinand.

Also, even with Terry now no longer captain, there is a serious risk of a potential rift opening up with Terry and the rest of the team over the affair, as Terry and Bridge both could be on the English National Team for the World Cup.

Whose to say that Ferdinand is not as good as he was last year ,due to his injury problems and might not even be a starter?

But, those are potential problems that could happen and those events might not even happen, as England could make a deep run in the World Cup with no chemistry problems what so ever.

But regardless of all of this, Fabio Capello shouldn't have gone with a player such as Rio Ferdinand in these circumstances and in my opinion, Capello should have waited at least a few more days before making his decision.
