North Carolina Tar Heels Suffer Loss To Virginia Tech In ACC Match-Up

Isaiah JensenFeb 5, 2010

The North Carolina Tar Heels continued their disappointing season with yet another loss last night.  This loss came against the Virginia Tech Hokies on the road by a score of 70-74.  UNC has now fallen to a 13-9 overall record and they have lost five of their last six games played.   This is the worst they’ve played since their five game losing streak they suffered in the 2002-03 season.

And although the Tar Heels lost this game, they did put up a strong fight against the Hokies on the road. At halftime UNC went into their locker room with a 35-33 lead.  Their shooting and rebounding was nothing fantastic, however, nor was Virginia Tech’s.  The Hokies shot an awful 39% from the floor the entire game.  It was the little things like free throws for the Hokies (18-22 from the line) that helped them come away with the win.

Malcolm Delaney was the leading scorer for Virginia Tech, and he was also the man who delivered the final knockout punch when he sunk two clutch free throws with only 36.6 seconds remaining in the game.  UNC put up a fight towards the end of this ball game climbing back from a 12 point deficit but the clutch shooting and great hustle by Virginia Tech was enough to hold the Tar Heels down until the end.

North Carolina is now 2-5 in Conference and is ranked 10th overall in the ACC.  With their current record, and their position in the ACC, it will without a doubt be a tough road for the Tar Heels from here on out.  The next game they play will be Sunday against the Maryland Terrapins.  If these young men from North Carolina want to even have a shot to even be in the NCAA Tournament then they have to start winning again; that needs to start for them against the Terrapins.  If they lose that game as well, then they will fall to 2-6 in Conference and the North Carolina Tar Heels might find themselves in the NIT Tournament instead of the NCAA Tournament.

It’s win or go home time for the Tar Heels now.  If they don’t start winning their games, then they will get their deserved fate of the NIT Tournament.   Will UNC show us what they can really do?  Or are they really as bad as they have showed us all?  Only time will tell.
