UFC 109: Ed Soares to Chael Sonnen: “I Would Be Keeping My Mouth Shut”

Recently, Chael Sonnen blasted Brazilian mega manager, Ed Soares, for being the “boring” mouth-piece behind two of the UFC’s champions. Soares would like to remind Sonnen he’s got enough to worry about in Nate Marquardt, instead of focusing on what’s happening at his Black House Gym .

“Who is this that we’re talking about?” Soares sarcastically asked MMAWeekly.com when approached about Sonnen and his comments.

Among the many talented fighters Soares reps, UFC middleweight king Anderson Silva and light-heavyweight champ Lyoto Machida are clearly his most prized. So when Sonnen went on the verbal attack in regards to Silva’s disrespect for the MMA media and Soares’ less-than-exciting promotional skills, it was time to fire back.

“Anyone that has a mouth can say what they want,” Soares said. “I don’t think people pay too much attention to what Chael does. Saying that Anderson’s boring or Anderson’s this, Anderson’s that, we don’t even need to go back and see what Chael has done. If you really want to analyze Chael’s career over the past couple years, he’s had some wins, but he said he didn’t tap against Paulo Filho. If the ref wouldn’t have stopped the fight, Paulo Filho would have his arm in Brazil with him.”

Sonnen defeated the mentally checked-out WEC middleweight champ at WEC 36 in November 2008. The proposed title bout was to put to rest the controversial submission victory Filho posted over Sonnen at WEC 31 just one year prior; however, Filho was well overweight and the bout was changed to a non-title affair.

“And when he beat Paulo Filho, he was 35 to 40 percent of a Paulo Filho and he took him to a decision,” Soares added. “Then he went and fought Damien Maia, got submitted quick, and now he’s going to fight Nate Marquardt which Nate just ended up knocking out Damien Maia.

“I think Chael should be really focused on his fight that he’s got against Nate Marquardt because I can tell you right now that’s probably going to be the hardest fight of his life. I would put my money on Nate.”

What about Sonnen’s claims that Anderson Silva actually understands and speaks perfectly good English, however would prefer to not talk to the American media directly?

“He doesn’t speak perfect English. It’s definitely improving a lot and he can start to have a little bit more of a conversation with people, but at the end of the day when the lights are on and the camera is there, he likes to have someone next to him there to translate for him,” Soares said.

So what the heck is Chael trying to do, Ed?

“I don’t know what he’s doing, but I would be keeping my mouth shut and in the gym training, especially training his stand-up,” Soares said in closing.

Sonnen will square-off against Marquardt this Saturday at UFC 109 inside the Mandalay Bay Event Center in Las Vegas. It is believed that the winner, particularly Marquardt, will face the victor of the Silva and Vitor Belfort middleweight title match at UFC 112 .
