Skip Holtz of South Florida Runs a Great Two-Minute Recruiting Drill
The last time Skip Holtz ran a two-minute drill, he was a high school quarterback in Arkansas.
Holtz had to run the recruiting equivalent when he took the job at South Florida with a mere two weeks to National Signing Day.
When the last fax was in, when the smoke cleared, Holtz deserved a pat on the back.
USF signed the highest-ranked recruit of any Big East team. Holtz was able to break the University of Miami's stronghold on its feeder program—Northwestern High. He lured in and signed Todd Chandler, a high-motor, fireplug defensive lineman. Chandler was ranked 67th in ESPN's top 150.
The Bulls also convinced another ESPN top 150 guy to stay at home. Terrence Mitchell from Hillsborough High, who originally committed to Florida State, will wear the green and gold.
At the end of the day, Holtz had some big, really big offensive linemen and a tall, strong-armed quarterback from LaGrange, Ga. named Jamius Gunsby (6'4", 215), who will probably be given the opportunity to become the backup to starter B.J. Daniels come summer camp.
In all, USF signed 19 players—a smaller class, but that's a good thing. It means the Bulls have a lot of players back from the 2009 season.
Yes, it was a scramble, a tough situation at best. But look around and most will say that Skip Holtz continues to impress at USF.
