Chael Sonnen, Grow Up, Anderson Silva Is No Fraud
Shame on Chael Sonnen for saying that Anderson Silva is a "fraud!"
If Matt Hughes and/or BJ Penn would have used an interpreter to speak for them, they might not have fallen out of favor for trash talking about their common opponent, Georges St. Pierre.
Yes, this is Grandma Dee and although I just mentioned GSP, this article is NOT about him.
Chael Sonnen has been cracking wise about several people, among them, Anderson Silva and his manager/translator, Ed Soares.
Many articles ago, I mentioned that my family saw one of Anderson Silva's fights in Ohio where he battled Rich Franklin. I did not go (due to being agoraphobic), but I was in close contact with my family by virtue of cell phones.
My husband loves to eat at steak houses. It just so happened that they ate at one where the waiter had also attended to Anderson Silva's hankering for a good steak. When he told my family about Anderson speaking in English during his meal, they of course tattled the news to Grandma.
(They also saw Joe Rogan going into a bar, but did not stalk him, just naturally reported the sighting to me).
Being the avid sportswriter that I am, I had mentioned this fact to my readers before Anderson spoke English while appearing in a cameo role coaching on one of the TUF series episodes.
Now in my opinion, Anderson allowing Ed Soares to speak for him is smart.
Most fighters who do not use English as their native language are leery of speaking for themselves. Matt Hughes, among many others, has made fun of my favorite French Canadian fighter for the way he speaks English.
It doesn't matter that Georges is extremely intelligent—the fact that he drops his "H's" seems to make him the butt of many jokes.
Yes, "I 'it 'im in the 'ead," does sound slightly hilarious. "Riddum" is another Georges-ism that has also made the rounds.
In light of the unenlightened among us, such as the Country Boy Hughes, who has a college education, but has English skills that belie said education, he should not so boldly criticise Georges for lacking skills. Can Matt Hughes speak any French? Somehow, I doubt it.
Why would anyone want to be made fun of by Matt Hughes and his ilk?
Being able to pick and choose whom he wishes to speak to in English is cool with me.
At any rate, why does Chael think that this constitutes a fraud? Is Anderson working for some Brazilian terrorist group with evil intentions of destroying the sport of MMA?
I think not.
Anderson may or may not be a great guy, but I don't really care about that as much as I care about his fighting skills, which translate themselves very clearly to me. He would probably overwhelm the likes of Chael Sonnen, were Nate Marquardt not up next, ready to accomplish that feat.
Never fear, Chael, the MMA fans care more about performance than elocution.
How lucky you are that Mr. A. Silva will not be demonstrating his performance skills on you at UFC 109!
And by the way, "War, Nate the Great!"
