National Signing Day 2010 Came and Went Too Quickly for Alabama
Larry Burton (Panama City Beach, Fl.) For Coach Nick Saban and the University of Alabama, National Signing Day came and went very quickly. Saban pretty much had the entire class locked in place months ago. The only uncertainty in the last few weeks was a recruit who wanted to drag his brother along (which Saban didn't go for, sending him to look elsewhere) and a couple of wavering recruits committed to other schools who also wanted to look at Alabama.
Therefore, in the end, Signing Day came and went without any real surprises. The good news is that Alabama finished with a top five class and still has two scholarships left that can be carried over to a bumper crop of 2011 talent.
The jewel of the class had to be quarterback Phillip Sims, the nation's top quarterback, who is already enrolled and attending Alabama. This gives him a big jump by allowing him to go through the offseason conditioning program and all the spring drills.
Another great recruit is five-star defensive back DeMarcus Milliner, who could play receiver as well. With his natural abilities and coaches Saban and Smart teaching him better habits, the sky is the limit with this young man's potential.
He was the top defensive back in the state and number two in the nation. Like Sims, he is already in school and going through the program, so it may be possible for this freshman to see the field this fall.
Saban filled two much needed positions by giving scholarships to both a punter and placekicker. Cade Foster can not only kick the ball, but can kick ass as well. He was a starting middle linebacker in high school and quite a standout player at that position. Like the other two, he is enrolled and going through off season drills.
The punter, Jay Williams from Thomasville, Alabama, is a tall, 6-foot-4 220 pound punter who can change field position with each punt. He could be a starter by fall as well.
In all, Saban signed six defensive backs, three wide receivers, two defensive ends, three offensive linemen, two tight ends, two running backs, four defensive linemen, one linebacker, one athlete, one place kicker, one punter and one quarterback.
Kirby Smart earned his recent pay increase by recruiting nine of the 26 players who were recruited. This man is not just an excellent coach, but a superb recruiter.
