Mayweather-Mosley: Wake Me When They Actually Sign

Bill CodyFeb 2, 2010

Call me cynical but as a boxing fan I just do not understand why we continue to have an article almost every stinkin' day stating that the Mayweather-Mosley fight is about to be signed.

A good friend who's been around the boxing game a long time told me the other day that you're never sure if the fights going to happen until the opening bell rings. And after the events of the last year I think boxing fans know this better than the fighters themselves.

So please tell me why everyone from the PR staff at Golden Boy Promotions to Yahoo Sports Kevin Iole keep up this constant drip, drip, drip of information about the upcoming Mayweather-Mosley fight.

Now I'm not saying the fight won't come off, I actually believe it will. But the more they insist the more I continue to have doubts.

Today's announcement was the silliest I've read yet. GBP announced that Sugar Shane had signed his contract even as Iole reported that "Earlier in the day, Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe said that a deal had been agreed upon, as reported Thursday by Yahoo! Sports and that contracts were being drawn up."

So what exactly did Mosley sign. An imaginary contract? A deal memo stating he'd agree to a contract that hadn't yet been drawn up?

And if they've agreed to everything why didn't they both sign that agreement?

I figure that the fight will most likely happen. But as a fan I'm just a little tired of the whole "we've agreed to fight, but we haven't agreed to fight" nonsense that boxing promoters keep feeding us.

I mean, didn't Mayweather and Pacquiao sign for a fight a couple months back? Well, it was announced that they did. I have no idea what that really meant. I just know the fight ain't happening.

Hopefully, Mayweather-Mosley will.
