Phil, You Should Take a Lesson From Tiger!
I'm sorry, I realize Phil Mickelson is the flavor the month right now, but boy he could sure use a lesson from Tiger. Phil needs to learn how to play at the front of the pack.
For the longest time, Phil has always been able to sit back and pick here and there at one Mr. Woods because as we all know, hindsight is 20/20. But the problem now is that Phil is the leader and obviously doesn't know how to handle it.
There are two reasons Phil shouldn't be using the 20 year old wedges that everyone agrees do not fall within the spirit of the new rule. First, they are only allowed because no one expected this agreement to have an impact 20 years after it was crafted. Need more proof, look at the misfits that are playing these clubs and would you ever want to be listed in the same group? Do you really want to be listed with John Daly in every conversation about clubs this week at Riviera?
The second reason why Phil is failing to lead, is because while Mr. Woods is out of action, Phil's "inferior equipment" quote from years back should come back to haunt him. On a side note, this is another reason why I'm pissed at Tiger for being a schmuck. If he could've kept it in his pocket, can you imagine how much fun this would be. I envision Tiger saying something like, can you imagine how good Phil would be if he could find Callaway clubs that were better than crap made 20 years ago?. How great would this be and you know Nike would be running with that on every page.
But, sadly we will not get that from one Mr. Woods, but we should get a lot more from Mr. Mickelson. If you pronounce yourself the leader and you say you are going to have a great year, maybe you should try acting like a leader. Now that this one player is showing the way, we have all sorts of players looking to bend the rule and put a truly illegal club or two in the bag.
So Phil, Tiger has some free time on his hands right now, or maybe he doesn't. But, hop in the jet, fly on over to Mississippi or Arizona and see if you can get an audience with someone who has led the tour to where it is right now. Personally, Tiger's an idiot, but at least he led the way I would want the leader of tour to act, with his actions, not his words.
