My Town Rocks: Latham, New York

Chris RadezJun 30, 2008

When people are asked where they're from, they generally give you an answer that isn't entirely correct. They tell you the name of a city that's close to where they live, but not the actual town they live in.

I'm here to tell you that I'm from Latham, NY ... and my town rocks.

Sports fans are just as much responsible for making their town the way it is as the local malls, restaurants and entertainment venues are. We, as people, make up the environment that we live in. It's a likely scenario that every town has it's own reason why the sports fans are like no other, and why the population takes pride in where they're from and how they live.

I'd like for you Bleacher Creatures to tell me (and the rest of the BR Community) why your town rocks. Title your article "My Town Rocks: (your town here)" as I have titled mine, and link to my article within yours so that people know what you're talking about. If you can find a picture that represents your town, upload it and tag it "my town rocks".

So, you're probably wondering why I think Latham rocks.

Latham is a small town in Upstate, NY (near Albany), and we in Latham don't live anywhere near a sporting venue. Yankee Stadium is a couple hours away, and that's about as close as we get to having a "home" team.

The result of that is a very diverse fanbase. I'm a Patriots fan, an A's fan, and a Bulls fan. My best friend likes the Dolphins and the White Sox. The trend I'm getting at continues as you go through the long list of people around here. We all love sports, and we all love different teams.

Therefore, when you go to a sports bar around here, you're likely to find a fan of almost every team on TV. If you go on a Sunday during football season, the trash talk is just scrumptious but everyone understands that it's only game. It's really a great time, no matter what time of the year it is or what sports are currently hot topics.

Other than sports, it's really just a fun place to live. There's plenty to do around here and experiencing the changing of the seasons is unbelievable in comparison to other parts of the nation.

The picture I used for this article is of a giant water tower that has always been in plain view here in Latham. It's a landmark that's nice to see after a business trip, or even a long vacation.

So, Bleacher Creatures, why does your town rock? I look forward to reading your response columns!
