Euro 2008: Top Five Goals

1. Fernando Torres (1-0 vs. Germany)—The championship winner showcased Torres’ physical and technical abilities cementing his hero status in Spain. He outraced two defenders and went to Philipp Lahm’s right taking him completely by surprise. His world-class finish was all that Spain would need to capture the Euro 2008 title.

2. Zlatan Ibrahimović (2-0 vs. Greece)—The Greeks hoped to repeat 2004 by employing their defensive methods. The game looked like it would end 0-0 until the Inter forward blasted home his first goal in several months time to the relief of the Swedish faithful.

3. Wesley Sneijder (4-1 vs. France)—This game illustrated the embarrasment of Dutch riches on offense. It was Sneijder’s score that was the best of the bunch. He turned at the top of the box and sent a high strike past French goalkeeper Grégory Coupet.

4. David Villa (2-1 vs. Sweden)—Spain which ran through the tournament without a loss or tie should have only taken a point from the game against Sweden. Villa who was the tournament’s top goal scorer saved the Spaniards with his stoppage-time finish.

5. Nihat Kahveci (3-2 vs. Czech Republic)—The Turks had several strikes that could have made the list, but Kahveci’s game-winner in the instant classic versus the Czech Republic will be the goal that is remembered from Turkey’s magical run in the upcoming years.
