Today (2007): Barbaro Passes Enters the Afterlife

Three years ago today, the world lost a truly magnificent creation.  Barbaro.  The Barbaro.  While many of his peers blissfully enjoyed the intrigue of the national spotlight, Barbaro was a much simpler equine.  He loved sugar cubes and hay bales, and we’re told that he never cared much for Secretariat as a driving inspiration.  Barbaro was more a Toronado guy, himself.

Barbaro was cremated shortly after he was euthanized – so leave the Elmer’s Glue jokes at home.  On the year anniversary of his “passing”, it was announced that his remains would be interred in front of an entrance to Churchill Downs, and that a bronze statue of Barbaro (seen above) would be placed atop his remains.

Unofficially, this hallowed location currently sits between “high school cheerleading practice” and “adult men’s softball field” as the best location to start an intriguing, “You know, this isn’t a real sport” argument.
