Can McLaren Pull Off a Title Fightback?

Billy SextonJun 28, 2008

McLaren Mercedes are under performing.

It's a fact.

They are lagging behind in both Championships and really need to perform in the second half of the season.

The question is: Can they fight back?

The last time Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen scored points at the same race was at Monaco.

Since then, McLaren have scored just five points in the last two races in Canada and France. Compared to the twenty-two that Ferrari and BMW have scored people are beginning to wonder whether McLaren are up to the job.

The Woking based team are extremely confident they can bounce back at their home Grand Prix at Silverstone and string together a good run of results to the season finish.

It's looking good for McLaren.

They were fastest on two days of the Silverstone tests earlier this week and the team behind them wasn't Scuderia Ferrari or BMW Sauber it was Toyota.

I'm not taking any credit away from Toyota, as it is clear they are making rapid progress.

But lets face it, Ferrari are going to be challenging McLaren for the win at Silverstone, not Toyota.

So can Woking get back on level terms with Maranello?

In my opinion, yes.

The new aero parts on the MP4-23 look to be working perfectly and Martin Whitmarsh is confident there is more to come.

"We’ve been particularly aggressive in our development strategy, bringing new aero parts to the French Grand Prix, making further revisions ahead of the Silverstone test and planning even more upgrades for future races."

Lewis Hamilton believes he can get back on a winning streak and he has almost achieved one of his many goals this season.

He stated that although most drivers want to win the Big Four races of Monaco, Silverstone, Monza and Spa he wants to win the first race of the season, he wants a win on the streets on Monte Carlo and he wants to round the hat trick off with a win at his home Grand Prix.

So, we look forward to next weekend with so many questions in our head.

Is Ferrari sandbagging?

Will Lewis make us proud?

Will McLaren get their title charge out of the gravel and back onto the tarmac?

Lets just wait and see.
