The Top Five Wrestlers in the Business Today: #1 Triple H

'Rowdy' Ross RutherfordJun 28, 2008

TRIPLE H. That's right, No. 1 on the top five wrestlers in the busines today, is none other than "The Game" Triple H. I'm sure you're not surprised.

Before I talk about HHH I would like to list a few wrestlers who did not make my list, so here are my Honorable Mentions:

  • John Cena: I was very close to making John my No. 2, but Kurt Angle was so much more deserving. If I had a Top Six list he defanitly would be No. 6.
  • Shawn Michaels: The only reason Michaels didn't make the list is because its not 1997, I also thought about making him No. 4, but I opted for Edge. I still love HBK though.
  • The Undertaker: Taker is still a great performer for his age. He would have made the top ten for sure. He's my favorite wrestler, but not the best [anymore].
  • AJ Styles: Another great TNA star, but not quite at the same level as Joe and Angle.
  • Randy Orton: He was so very close to being my No. 4 also, but I believed Edge was a much better heel and had accomplished more.
  • Jeff Hardy: The younger Hardy brother has been tremendously over lately and was my No. 5 pick up until the last minute, where I decided to go with Samoa Joe instead.

Now back to the one who did make my list, Triple H. Hunter would play second fiddle for a couple of years before HBK's back injury. With Shawn gone the WWE needed a bad boy to take care of all of those faces [Austin, Rocky, Mankind]. Enter "The Game."

When you think of WWE, when you think of Pro Wrestling, you think of Triple H. The guy has accomplished everything in WWE. He is the Ric Flair of WWE. Let's take a little stroll down memory lane, shall we?

After an unsuccessful run in WCW as Terra Ryzing [I know, bad ass name isn't it?] HHH debuted in WWE as an uptight, rich blue blood. He was actually doing quite well until The MSG Incident; he even won the Intercontinental Title at one point.

After two years as an annoying a-hole, Hunter teamed with fellow bad ass HBK, and together with Chyna, became the NWO, oh crap that's the other fraction...I mean DeGeneration X.

Triple H played second banana to Shawn for a while, that is until Michaels injured his back. With DX out of the picture (for the time being) HHH shot out on his own. Winning his first title the night after Summerslam, beating "The Hardcore Legend" Mick Foley. Of course, like everything else in the Attitude Era, it didn't last long. He dropped the title to Vince McMahon and then regained it in a six pack match. He would later lose it to The Big Show later that year (man the Atitube Era was f***** up).

Triple H began feuding with Cactus Jack in early 2000 and retained his title at Wrestlmania 2000 against him, The Rock, and The Big Show.  HHH lost the title to The Rock at Backlash and then won it back 3 weeks later (man, the WWE would do anything to get ratings back then).

Triple H began teaming with Steve Austin in 2001, even holding the World Tag Team Championship together; it didn't last long. In May, Triple H suffered a quad injury that put him on the shelf for nearly a year.

He returned to find his wife managing The Undisputed WWE Champion Chris Jericho (that witch). The two faced off at Wrestlemania X8 and Triple H beat the odds (duhhh).

Triple H lost the title to Hogan at Backlash the next month.

In the following months rumors of an old friend returning were everywhere. Was it "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels?

When HBK did return we all thought we were seeing the DX reunion, we were wrong. HHH Pedigreed his former partner and the stage was set for the most bad ass match ever at Summerslam 2002.

After WWE separated the brands and that wuss Brock Lesnar said he was not defending the WWE Title on Raw, Eric Bishof showed up with the World Heavyweight Title. He named Triple H as its holder. Then the legendary Ric Flair walked in and stated he was a 16-time world champion and never had anything handed to him, so Triple H defended the title against "Naitch" and won.

This began HHH and Flair's friendship. Triple H dropped the World Title to Shawn later that fall and soon regained it from him a month later at Armageddon.

Triple H went on to defend his title against the likes of Scott Steiner, Booker T, and Kevin Nash. He held the World Title for most of 2003 only losing it once to Goldberg. He regained it a month later.

HHH held the title until Wrestlemania XX where he dropped it to Benoit. He would stay in hot pursuit of the title all year, even going as far as kicking Orton out of Evolution, and kicking his butt at Unforgiven.

The World Title was later vacated after a triple threat match ended in controversial fashion. Triple H regained the title at New Year's Revolution in the Elimination Chamber.

HHH also had a run-in with his other student, Batista. Triple H lost the title to his former Evolution teammate and HHH would take some time off after losing two rematches to Batista.

"The Game" returned and had a couple of nice feuds with Flair and Cena (again losing at 'Mania), before he and HBK got the band back together. DX ran around for a good year, mooned some people and kicked Vince's butt at every turn. It all came to an abrupt end when Triple H tore his other quad at New Year's Revolution in early 2007. He would be out of action until Summerslam and took out "King" Booker at the event.

When John Cena was out of the picture, HHH won and lost the WWE Championship to Randy Orton at No Mercy. HHH would run around Raw, have feuds with Jeff Hardy, John Cena, and Randy Orton before regaining the WWE Chamionship at Backlash, and Triple H has been sitting pretty ever since.

Now on Smackdown who knows what's in store for the 12-time world champion, but I can only imagine he will dominate Smackdown and kick even more butt than before.

HHH will be remembered as the greatest wrestler of his generation, with more accomplishments than any other superstar today. Triple H is wrestling Today!!!!
