Xavier Nady a Chicago Cub, Pending Physical

Andy MillerJan 26, 2010

The Chicago Cubs have found their fourth outfielder, and it's not Jonny Gomes or Jermaine Dye. Xavier Nady signed a one year deal worth $3.3 million pending a physical according to Yahoo! Sports (Once again, David Kaplan has failed me).

Xavier Nady is coming off of a season in which he only played seven games with the New York Yankees before undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Oh, and did I mention that it's his second Tommy John in his 10-year professional career?

Nady started his playing career in San Diego, but came into his own with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 2007, Nady hit 20 homers with 78 RBI and had an OBP of .330 for Pittsburgh.

But Nady was not immune to the Pirates giving away decent talent. At the trade deadline of 2008, Nady was traded to the New York Yankees.

Xavier Nady is not immune to injuries, as highlighted by his seven game 2009 season.

Nady is used to having everyday playing time, and perhaps that's what has re-aggravated his elbow problems. Perhaps a backup role is just what the 32-year-old outfielder needs.

Nady will see a majority of his playing time in right field in what will most likely be a platoon role in right field with Kosuke Fukudome. Of course, there's the annual Alfonso Soriano injury, so, he'll be spending some time in left field as well. Nady is an above average fielder with a career .984 fielding percentage.

Nady will take a physical tomorrow, and with the assumption that he passes, the Cubs will officially announce the signing of their new outfielder.

Another overpaid outfielder to add to the collection.
