Another Look at the 2010 Yankees Payroll

Bronx Baseball DailyJan 21, 2010

I thought it was time to take a look at the Yankees 2010 payroll again since they seem pretty much set with the roster right now. They could add one more piece, likely an outfielder, but even that is not guaranteed.

We don’t have salary for everyone yet, so the young players who are not arbitration eligible we’re going to have to take guesses on. Those salaries will be italicized .

2010 Yankees Payroll : $204.89 million (estimated )

Starting Pitchers : $65.75 million (estimated including both Joba and Hughes)

CC Sabathia: $23 million
AJ Burnett: $16.5 million
Andy Pettitte: $11.75 million
Javier Vazquez: $11.5 million
Joba Chamberlain: $1.5 million
Phil Hughes: $1.5 million

Relief Pitchers: $24.25 million (estimated including more pitchers than Yankees will actually carry)

Mariano Rivera: $15 million
Damaso Marte: $4 million
Chad Gaudin: $2.95 million
Sergio Mitre: $0.85 million
Boone Logan: $0.59 million
David Robertson: $0.43 million
Alfredo Aceves: $0.43 million

Catchers: $13.53 million (estimated)

Jorge Posada: $13.1 million
Francisco Cervelli: $0.43 million

Infielders : $82.79 (estimated)

Alex Rodriguez: $32 million
Derek Jeter: $21 million
Mark Teixeira: $20 million
Robinson Cano: $9 million
Juan Miranda: $0.4 million
Ramiro Pena: $0.39 million

Outfielders : $13.07 million (estimated)

Nick Swisher: $6.75 million
Curtis Granderson: $5.5 million
Brett Gardner: $0.43 million
Jamie Hoffmann: $0.39 million

DH : $5.5 million

Nick Johnson: $5.5 million

Looking at that list everything seems in order. There are two potential lineup changes that can change. The first is that they are likely to add another outfielder. So if there is a change you add whatever value that outfielder has and subtract $0.4 million because that would remove Juan Miranda off the list.

Also it’s still likely that the Yankees will try to trade Chad Gaudin because he and Sergio Mitre are essentially filling the same role, the long relief role, and the Yankees have other guys to fill that role behind Mitre, like Alfredo Aceves or a minor leaguer, if there is an injury. My guess is Gaudin is the one to go because he earns more.

All numbers come from Cot’s Baseball Contracts or off the top of my head (I made educated guesses based off of players with similar time spent in the league).
