New York Yankees Interested in Jim Edmonds

Bronx Baseball DailyJan 22, 2010

Outfielder Jim Edmonds has been busy trying to convince the St. Louis Cardinals that heโ€™s still good enough to play for them, but apparently the Yankees donโ€™t need convincing as they have been in contact with the 39-year-old who hasnโ€™t played since 2008, according to Rob Rains of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat .

โ€œIโ€™m trying to figure out what to do,โ€ Edmonds said on The Morning After program on 1380 The Team. โ€œWeโ€™re just going to have to see how it goes.

โ€œI have decided I want to try to play, but I need a couple of weeks to start hitting,โ€ he said. โ€œIโ€™ve been running and working out, but I need to start throwing and hitting a little more. Itโ€™s hard to get outside in this weather. Iโ€™ll know a little more by the end of next week.

โ€œI want to play but obviously I love it here and want to play here,โ€ Edmonds said. โ€œI didnโ€™t think I would generate this much action just saying I wanted to play. Weโ€™ll see who is really serious in the next couple of days and see if the Cardinals get back to me.โ€

On the Yankees interest:

โ€œThatโ€™s a pretty nice situation over there,โ€ he said. โ€œItโ€™s going to be a tough scenario. Iโ€™m not going to go somewhere just to play,โ€ he said. โ€œI thought it would be fun to come back (to St. Louis) to play and be a part of that team with Mark (McGwire) here and all the guys that I know, and then word got around.

This comes as a bit of surprising news. It doesnโ€™t make a whole lot of sense though as general manager Brian Cashman has already said heโ€™s not looking for a left handed bat in the outfield. It makes even less sense when you consider that the last time Edmonds played was in 2008 and he was a pure platoon player who didnโ€™t bat against lefties.

That being said, I cannot see the Yankees making a serious push to acquire the outfielder. This seems like a ploy by someone, either by the Yankees to let potential outfield candidates, not necessarily just Johnny Damon, know that they have competition. Or it could be a ploy by Edmonds to get the Cardinals to move a little quicker in deciding whether or not to bring him back.

Either way, I donโ€™t see this happening. Do you?
