Come On Wal-Mart, Rock The Red

I'm a big time homer when it comes to Washington D.C. sports. I've got countless Washington Redskins, Capitals, and Nationals jerseys in my closet.

My 20 month old son, however, does not have quite that collection. 

He has Chris Cooley and Clinton Portis jerseys and a generic Nats jersey. He does not, though, have a Caps jersey.

With all the hype here in the District surrounding the Caps and Penguins rematch I felt the need to rectify my son's jersey problem.

Even though I wouldn't have it for tonight's game I went over to NHL.com. Not the best idea, since the cheapest jersey was still 55 dollars.

Why would I spend that much money on something that my boy is going to grow out of before the end of the season?

I decided I'd try Wal-Mart on my way home from work this evening. After all, that's where I picked up his Skins and Nats jerseys and they were all under 15 bucks. Sure they're not authentic, but I don't think he cares.

However, when I got to the kid's section I did not find a single Capitals item.

There were of course plenty Redskins items, but no Caps items. 

D.C. is and probably always will be a football town. Since the Skins are my first love, I don't have a problem with that.

That amount of Skins items didn't bug me, what did though, was the amount of Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers items.

D.C. is a unique area. We probably have more imported residents than any city in the country, so when I see other sports teams merchandise (especially the Steelers, there are a lot of transplants from the Steel City here), I'm not shocked.

But if you're going to carry other cities' teams how about you cover all the local teams first?

Don't worry Wal-Mart, I'm not going to hold it against you. You still have the cheapest groceries in the area.

Plus, there have been others slow to adopt love for the Caps. But for those of us who have been rocking the red, then blue, then back to red, I'd like to ask Wal-Mart to jump on the bandwagon and get some cheap jerseys in stock.
