Today (1962): Chris Sabo is born. Corneal Abrasions have a savior.
January 19, 1962
Truth be told, there was zero debate whatsoever regarding what to feature on JoeSportsFan this morning. Chris Sabo’s birthday only comes once a year, and dammit, we’re going to celebrate it every time. That’s a promise.
Sabo turns 48 today. Slap on a pair of Rec Specs and dare your friend to stab you in the eye with a pencil. It’s not possible. Full protection, kids. Even around the temples; seamless.
Bonus Chris Sabo Factoid: In his final season with in Cincinnati in 1996, Sabo shattered his bat – which was filled with cork. Sabo received a seven-game suspension, but maintains that he had never corked a bat in his life, claiming that the bat belonged to another player. He argued that his statistics that season (3HR in 52 games) were “hardly an endorsement of the cork industry.” Touche.
Bonus Bonus Sabo Factoid: Reds manager Pete Rose gave Sabo the nickname “Spuds” during his rookie season in 1988, citing a resemblance to a bull terrier character in Bud Light commercials named Spuds MacKenzie.
