The San Diego Chargers: The Greatest Team That Has Never Won Anything

Bob WarjaJan 17, 2010

Watching the New York Jets defeat the San Diego Chargers on Sunday made me realize one thing about football—that the better team doesn't always win the game.

The Bolts had won 11 games in a row and were facing a Jets team that was lucky to even be in the playoffs.

For if the Colts hadn't replaced their starters and the Bengals had taken the game seriously, the Jets might be outside looking in.

The Chargers went 13-3 this season and won the AFC West. But just like a season that wasn't finished the right way, the game was equally inconsistent.

In the first half, the Chargers limited New York to zero points, two first downs and just 99 total yards and forced three-and-outs on their first four offensive drives. But they missed tackles and a 40-yard field goal in the second half and were doomed.

But the problem extends beyond this season's disappointment.

They have had one of the best running backs in history in LaDainian Tomlinson . They have a great young QB in Philip Rivers.

The Chargers haven't had a losing season since 2003, yet they have never won a Super Bowl.

In recent times, they have made the playoffs in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 and yet every time it has ended in disappointment.

Could it be bad luck or is it defense? They say defense wins championships and let's face it, the defense has let the Bolts down.

But there is more to it, it seems. Perhaps Norv Turner isn't the man to direct the team to a Super Bowl. He may be one of those coaches that can get it done when everything is perfect but can't get the team to win when adversity strikes.

Whatever the reason, it strikes me that the Bolts may just be the best team I've ever seen that continues to fall short. Well, them and the Buffalo Bills, come to think of it.
