Some Advice for the Charlotte Bobcats Before the Draft

A-Train RodriguezJun 26, 2008

"I worry about drafts. You don't want to make a mistake," Brown said in an AP article last week.  There is good news for you Larry, I am here to help.

First and foremost, stay away from twins who are big men coming out of Stanford.  Ask the Nets or the Jazz how that has worked out for them.  Wasn't one of the Collins brothers supposed to better than the other.  I can't tell the difference anymore.

Avoid condiments.  After you grabbed the number 20 pick from the Western Conference headquarters of the NBA Tar Heel Alumni Association President George Karl, many have speculated you will package the 20, and the number nine to move into the top five.  Stay away from O.J. Mayo; my gut tells me he will be more like Harold Miner or Dejuan Wagner than Dwayne Wade.

Listen to Tom Sorenson of the Charlotte Observer.  As he has pointed out every month this NBA season, he advised the organization to package the numbers five and thirteen before the 2005 draft to move to number four and select Chris Paul. He also wanted Brandon Roy instead of Adam Morrison in the 2006 draft.  Enough said.

Whatever Jordan tells you, do the opposite.  Jordan brought in one of the worst coaches in NBA history last season, Sam Vincent.  He drafted Kwame Brown while in Washington and Adam Morrison with his first pick as a Bobcats executive.  He probably loves Mayo.   I understand he is your boss, but don't let him "Isiah" you.  If Jordan told me to stand on 19 at a blackjack table, I'd hit twice.

Answer the phone. Only Gerald Wallace and Jason Richardson should be considered untouchable on the current roster. If you can walk out of tonight's draft with a quality NBA big via trade, do it.  Last year's deal, obtaining Richardson for the number eight, is the type of move that needs to be repeated.  Bobcats fans do not want projects.  And you don't have a track record for sticking around long enough to see them through.  Make the playoffs next year, that is all they want.
