Argument Against Moving to San Jose

rodger packerJan 14, 2010

The San Francisco Giants do not have a legal leg to stand on when it comes to the Oakland Athletics desire to move to San Jose. ย MLB is exempt from Anti-Trust Laws. ย Any relocation requires 3/4 approval from MLB owners. ย The only reason The Giants are making a stink is because their Minor League affiliate is located in San Jose. ย

The argument that a Major League Baseball team cannot survive economically withoutย  a new ball park is bogus. Sports teams make the majority of their revenue in the Media Market, not on gate receipts. ย The Oakland A's have not had a Major Media Outlet for years and years, even while winning championships.

Buzz: Cutch Joins New Team

The smart move economically for the Oakland A's would be to move to Sacramento. ย Here is why. ย The A's AAA team is located in Sacramento, and have a Baseball only facility, which is state of the art. ย The owners of the River-Cats are genius. ย To save money, time and pain in bringing a stadium vote to the public which 9 times out of ten are voted down, they can renovate the stadium for much cheaper without voter approval. ย The River-cats have no issue with gate receipts and baseball is a very popular attraction.

Sacramento is the 27th biggest media market in the united states while San Jose is down toward 30. ย KHTK Sports Radio is one of the highest rated stations in the country which would give a larger exposure and more money to field a better team for a longer period of time.

The argument as to what would you do withย  the River-Cats? ย relocate them to Stockton, relocate the Stockton team as well. ย Fans are ultimately sick of this ongoing problem withย  the Oakland A's. ย Yes, it is unfortunate that baseball is a Business and not an attraction and that is how it is being run, not caring about #1 fan. ย If the owners of the Oakland A's truly cared then look at history, try to get public financing and voter approval for a stadium takes years and years without any success, this is just a smoke screen to move the team out of the area, or state.

Sacramento is the logical place to put the Oakland Athletics without a doubt as to any economic loss. ย You could be in a new stadium in a years time, it doesn't take a genius. ย Do the right thing, and do what is in the best interest of the FAN and do what is in the best interest of BASEBALL.
