If Packers-Cardinals Game Was Greatest Ever, What Can Be Said About Defenses?

Bob WarjaJan 10, 2010

Sure, the game today between the Green Bay Packers and the Arizona Cardinals was exciting. It went down to the wire and was truly worthwhile TV viewing.

But to say that it is one of the greatest playoff games in history is insulting to those of us who appreciate defensive football. For there was little defense played in this game.

Yes, I understand that offense is king in every sport. Chicks dig the long ball in baseball so much that Bud Selig turned a blind eye to the steroid-infused home runs being hit ad nauseum.

But come on, for those of use who actually get a thrill from a defensive end blindsiding a QB and smashing him to the ground in a lifeless heap, this game was lacking.

The 51-45 Arizona victory in OT set the all-time NFL record for most points in a playoff game.

Sure, it was a defensive play that sealed the game for the Cards. Karlos Dansby returned Aaron Rodgers' fumble 17 yards for a touchdown to give the Cardinals the win Sunday.

But not much defense was played this game, as Kurt Warner threw for 379 yards and five TDs, while Rodgers was good for 422 yards and four TDs in a game that featured over 1,000 yards of offense.

"That's probably one of the best games ever played in the playoffs," Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said.

Oh really? Consider that Warner had more touchdown passes (five) than incompletions (four).

It was the most points allowed by the Packers in their 41-game playoff history.

Arizona had 156 yards rushing against a Packers defense ranked No. 2 overall, No. 1 against the run. The 13 touchdowns were an NFL playoff record.

It was an insane example of offensive football and it was great theater. But it left a lot to be desired if you like defense.
