Team Leach Rally an Exercise in Futility

Eddie DzurillaJan 10, 2010

There is a Team Leach Rally scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday on the Texas Tech campus.

My question is, why?

Tech has just selected a new coach, Tommy Tuberville. Tuberville, who previously coached in the SEC and Auburn, brings pretty solid credentials including leading Auburn to an undefeated 13-0 season and No. 2 ranking in 2004 (another example of the BCS stiffing a team, but that's another article).

So with the new coach selected and the process between Leach and the Tech administration heading to the courthouse what, pray tell, is the rally supposed to accomplish?

Is it supposed to let us know that a lot of Tech fans were bummed out at Leach's firing? News flash. We already know that.

Is it supposed to get Leach his job back? Another news flash. Ain't gonna happen.

Is it supposed to welcome the new coach to campus? Call me Mr. Etiquette, but this is not exactly the right way to welcome Coach Tuberville.

Is it supposed to influence the university negotiations with Leach regarding his contract and his termination? Good luck on that. The lawyers are dealing with that now.

The rally, as it stands, is a complete exercise in futility. Absolutely nothing positive will be accomplished from it, and it does hold the potential for negative repercussions with regards to the new coach and the current players.

It seems to be nothing more than an opportunity for fans to rant and rave about wanting Leach back, and also to continue bashing Adam James.  But as far as accomplishing anything?

Nope. Nada. Nothing. Zip.

You might as well organize an anti-wind rally why you're at it, since that pesky West Texas wind blowing off the high plains can be darn annoying at times.

It won't do anything about it, but maybe you will feel good if you vent for a while.  And you'll have about just as much impact as the Team Leach rally with regards to changing the situation.

Running back Barron Batch was quoted by the Associated Press with regards to the rally as saying, "I'm so tired of that stuff. They need to start supporting the team."

Perhaps Tech fans should listen to his advice.
