Pete Carroll-Seahawks: USC's Carroll Agrees To Be Next Seahawks Head Coach

Todd KaufmannJan 9, 2010

Pete Carroll's tenure at USC has officially come to an end. According to multiple sources at ESPN, Carroll agreed in principle to become the next head coach of the Seattle Seahawks.

There has been a lot of talk around college football that Carroll is leaving right in front of possible NCAA infractions against USC.

But, after Seattle fired former head coach Jim Mora Jr., they quickly zeroed in on Pete Carroll and it didn't take long for the long-time USC coach to accept the deal and head for the Pacific Northwest.

Carroll is no stranger to being an NFL coach. He was the head coach of the New York Jets in 1994 finishing with a 6-10 record.

In 1997, Carroll became the head coach of the New England Patriots. In three seasons with the team he finished with a combined record of 27-21, leading the team to the playoffs in two of his three seasons at the helm.

Then in 2001, two years after his departure from the NFL, Carroll became the head coach at the University of Southern California.

After finishing 6-6 in his first season with the Trojans, Carroll would lead his team to seven straight BCS bowl games including two straight national championships in 2003 and 2004.

But what does this mean for the university with Carroll's departure? What happens to the verbal commits they've received from high school or junior college recruits? Will they rescind their commits or will they honor their word and remain with the university?

What will Carroll's legacy be if the NCAA does find the school in violation of any practices during recruiting over his tenure? What sanctions will the NCAA bring upon the university if in fact violations are found?

We may not know the answers for some time, but what we do know is Pete Carroll will begin his third stint in the National Football League with the Seattle Seahawks.
