Rumors are both wonderful and dangerous things, especially when you have a high profile job like Pete Carroll.

When you're making this kind of money at a school you have to be above rumors. Rumors hurt recruiting, can hurt your employment longevity cause some serious problems with your marriage.

The latest is no rumor on one hand, but cold reality, he is talking to the people about a job opening at Seattle. What's rumor is why?

Could Carroll have information the NCAA obtained against USC that is forthcoming and simply jumping ship while the getting is good?

Or is it just that he knows USC talent pool is finally drying up after a long run?

Job rumors come and go with Carroll about as often as women stories do. People close to Carroll have always said he's had an eye for the ladies, and Charlie Weis' December parting shot spelled out that the latest rumor, that he was shacked up with a USC Graduate Student in a little love nest in Malibu.

That might be looked down in college but they punch your man card for that in the NFL it seems. But let's get back to this latest rumor.

So the real question is if not the NCAA investigation, why would Carroll leave his comfy confines there to go not only to the NFL, but to Seattle. We're not talking the Jets or even Miami, where you can enjoy life and and the money you make.

And it's not like you did well in the last two forays into the NFL went that well, you were fired, twice and both campaigns could be considered busts.

So why, Pete? Why leave a place you rock at for NFL hell? The following weeks will be interesting indeed, and maybe some answers will be forthcoming.
