Today (1937): The English Language Meets Its Match; Lou Holtz is Born

January 6, 1937

73 years ago today in a mythical place known as Follansbee, West Virginia, a worthy adversary to the English language was brought into the world. It was a baby that is believed to have exited the womb with a killer set of bifocals already in place, that grew into a man who spoke in his own personalized dialect consisting of random hisses and whistles.  While we can’t understand a word he’s saying, somehow we just get it.  He simply transcends standard verbal communication. 

He would go on to earn a reputation as one of the great motivational speakers, despite the need for those within 10 yards of the podium to don ponchos as if it were a Gallagher performance.   

We speak of course of the one and only Louis Leo “Lou” Holtz, most famous for his stint as the Notre Dame head football coach and current analyst on ESPN, who today celebrates his 73rd birthday.

We ask you now to simply sit back, listen and let Dr. Lou take you to a special place that only he can…
