Breakdown
The Twins drafted Derek McCallum in the fourth round of the 2009 draft. Born and raised in Minnesota, the Twins originally showed interest when they selected him in the 50th round of the 2006 draft.
McCallum decided to go to the University of Minnesota. After two pedestrian years he erupted in his junior year hitting .409/.485/.741 with 18 home runs in 232 at-bats.
The Twins signed McCallum quickly and sent him to Tennessee where he played second base for the Elizabethton Twins. His transition to using a wood bat didn't turn out as well as when he played for the St. Cloud River Bats, where he placed second in NWL MVP voting. He hit .241/.310/.382 with 19 extra-base hits for the Twins. As a former shortstop, McCallum plays a good second base.
