Steven Sheffield had the opportunity to come off the bench for the Texas Tech Red Raiders to help them win the Valero Alamo Bowl over Michigan State. Just a couple of days after the game we talked to him about his Bowl experience, living in Lubbock, TX and many other things. A summary of what was discussed is below. A link to the podcast is at the bottom of the page.

[When asked about his Bowl Game experience coming in as an emergency backup but throwing a couple of TD passes]

He said that both teams came into the game with adversity as Michigan State had quite a few players dismissed from the team, and Tech had the obvious coaching issues. The players realized that it was out of their control, so they just focused on beating Michigan State. Overall he thinks Ruffin McNeal did a good job.

[When asked about how he got to be at Tech from Pflugerville Connally High School]

He was a “preferred walk-on,” as he didn’t have any Division I scholarship offers from anyone other than the Academies (Navy, Air Force, Army). Talked about getting the call from Mike Leach while returning from a recruiting trip to a Division II school.

[On how the last quarter handled missing Coach Leach.]

Felt it was handled well by the players and particularly Coach Ruffin.

[When asked about how he felt the season went this year.]

A definite let-down. They wanted to win every game, but lost to Texas and Houston, which put a damper on the team.

[It was pointed out that he started three games in the regular season all of which were won, and he also led the team to the win in the Valero Alamo Bowl. When asked about his plans for the future.]

Gain some weight. Putting on 15-20 pounds is a major goal. He plans on working hard eating and throwing a bunch.

[On how he’ll adjust based on a new coach.]

It’s out of his hands so he’ll just practice throwing. Said hopes that Coach Ruff gets the job and that most of the team wants the same thing.

[What its like playing in a small town like Lubbock, TX?]

It’s nice knowing that people know you and its easy to get around, good driving. Not like Austin (where he’s from).

[What did you do to celebrate after winning the Bowl Game.]

It ended so late, nobody really did anything, so they just hung out in the Hotel.

We appreciate Steven Sheffield for coming on the show and following his interview is an interview with a former Texas Tech Soccer player, Lauren (Taylor) Martinez where she talks about Mike Leach and Elizabeth Lambert, the dirty New Mexico Soccer player.
