BCS Teams Need to Take Note On How To Schedule Out Of Conference Games

Wild Bill Jan 5, 2010

They became a Division 1 team in 2001 and notched their first victory over a BCS conference foe that same year when they upset the Bulldogs of Mississippi State in Starkville.

In 2003 they were an independent team but scheduled #7 Kansas State for their season opener on the road, played Big-10 representative Minnesota on the road, played #12 Nebraska again on the road, played ACC representative Virginia also you guessed it on the road. This team also beat the Thundering Herd of Marshall at home.

In 2004 they again beat Marshall to open the season on the road, upset #19 Missouri at home, gave the Gamecocks of South Carolina all they could handle on the road, and nearly upset LSU in Death Valley losing by 4 to finish the regular season 7-4.

In 2005 half of their 4 out of conference games were against BCS conference foes losing to both Mizzou and South Carolina.

In 2006 they played 3 of their 4 out of conference games against BCS conference teams 2 of which were ranked in the top 25 at the time. They narrowly lost to Florida State in Tallahassee and getting mauled in Lincoln against Nebraska.

IN 2007 they opened the season with #21 Arkansas, #4 Florida, and Oklahoma St, before playing #10 Georgia. All the ranked teams they played this season were on the road. They upset the Cowboys at home in Movie Gallery Stadium.

In 2008 they played #13 Ohio State at the Shoe and gave them all they could handle, lost big to Oklahoma State in Stillwater, and narrowly lost to #19 LSU again in Death Valley.

This year they played 3 bowl bound teams in Bowling Green, #1 Florida in the Swamp, and Arkansas on the road. Losing all three, but to no one else on their schedule.

Where am I going with this you ask? Well my point is for the other so called "Mid Majors " who want to sit at the adults table that is the BCS. Now this team didn't win all or even most of their games playing with the big boys, but they had the guts to schedule them and even pull off upsets here and there. It is also to the BCS conference athletic directors, university presidents, and who ever else plays a part in the regular season scheduling. If they want to avoid having the government getting involved where they have no business and force a playoff then they should start making out of conference schedules look something like this team has done in their 8 short years as an FBS team. This is a note to Boise St who won't schedule BCS conference opponents unless they agree to home and home games. If you want to gain respectability go out of a limb and gain the respectability that will get you invited year in and year out make a schedule like this year in and year out.

Fans of the teams this team has already either upset or nearly upset don't need to be told who this team is, but for those of you that do they are the Troy Trojans. They will play any team, anywhere, anytime. If every team in the country could put in the effort to play a schedule like these kids do year in and year out there possibly would be less of a calling for a playoff and less of a chance the government could get involved. Thanks for your time.
