A Showdown Of Heisman Calibur On a National Stage

Prajit RamaprasadDec 30, 2009

Football is a funny game.   On any given Saturday or Sunday, anyone can win.   All the statistics could line in favor of one team like how they did to the Dolphins early in the year against the Colts.  But guess what...the Colts still won.  At the end of the day it doesn't matter how many yards you rush or pass for, all it matters is how much you scored and how much they scored.

So as I sit down trying to think of my prediction for the BCS Championship Game, I try to take in all the factors.  But let me be honest when I say, the accuracy of my predictions is low.  There simply remain way too many variables as too what can happen in that game between Alabama and Texas.

This game is going to be about two teams that redeemed themselves this year from their defeats the year before.  Texas was seconds from going to the Championship last year, and Alabama a crushing loss from the Championship as well. Both these teams now have that chance to play on the grandest stage of college football.

It is only natural that with the two "best" teams in college football playing against one another, so will two of the best college football players face off against each other.  I guess the appropriate term is not face off against another but rather compete too see who can change the game most for their team.  Both offensive players, Colt McCoy and Mark Ingram, quarterback and running back respectively will try to bring the glory to their team.

Colt McCoy is arguably one of the best college football quarterbacks to play the game, holding the record for the most wins in college history by a starting quarterback.  Last year, he was one of the most impressive players with his ridiculously high completion percentage.  This year was a test for McCoy, who truly struggled through the early parts of the season.  The lack of a running game was killing Texas, and somehow Colt McCoy still managed to put up impressive stats, making a strong case for the Heisman.

Where Texas was one sided in their offense, Alabama was able to create more of a two headed monster.   While there passing attack was better then the running attack of Texas, they relied on their running game to come through in the big games.  It is hard for a running back to really distinguish himself from the crowded backfield of the college football, with guys like Toby Gerhart, C.J Spiller, Javhid Best, and plenty of other talented runners.   Mark Ingram was once of the few backs to be recognized from a large pool of players, winning the most prestigious award in college football, the Heisman.  It wasn't simply the fact that he obliterated competition, but it was the fact that in face of good teams he succeeded.  Consistent for most of the year, he is the major face of Albama's offense.

Now remember that both these teams have fantastic defenses, that rank among the best in the country.   Indeed, it will be the job of the offense to breakthrough for victory and glory of their school.  These two kids will be thrust upon national spotlight, for perhaps the biggest battle of their careers.   In a world where the college stud can become a pro dud, no chances for the same type of fame and glory are guaranteed.  God knows how many top QB's and RB's have busted in the pros.  This may be one of the few things that these men can cling to proudly in their life.   I don't know who is going to show up on that field, but all I know is we will be watching two of the best offensive college players facing off against the best defenses in the league.  A battle of two qualified Heisman candidates is approaching, who cracks will remain to be seen.
