Can the Mike Leach Saga Show Football's Getting Too Politically Correct?

Larry BurtonDec 30, 2009

Would we have many of the great coaches of yesterday if they had to come up through this world's politically correct dramas?

Could Coach Bryant have taken boys out to the "Junction" in today's world?

Could Knute Rockney have not kicked a slacking player?

Could Woody Hayes not have punched an opposing player? Oh wait, maybe that's a bad example.

But the point is, to quote and change one word out of a line in a movie with Tom Hanks called A League of Their Own , "There's no crying in football".

To listen to the James family, their hard working, but valiantly hurt, football playing son was locked in a dark closet, a virtual dungeon, as Mike Leach twirled the ends of his long dastardly mustache while planning his next move against their son.

In reality, he was with trainers under a covered awning where players go to escape the heat of the sun during breaks in practice. And he was set there because he showed up with sunglasses on for practice, saying the light hurt his eyes.

Poor baby. The doctor had cleared him to attend practice and said that what Coach Leach did and where he placed him put James in no harm and could have been for the best.

So before even understanding all the facts, how does Texas Tech repay the coach that has brought them the most success in their entire history?

They fire him.

I thought suspending the coach for disciplining a kid who has a long history of laziness and entitlement was over the top, but firing him?

Are schools getting that politically correct now. What's next?

Should little Johnny be able to get a coach fired for calling him lazy and hurting his self-esteem?  Will Rodney be able to sue if the coach doesn't play him as many minutes as Raymond?

Texas Tech didn't just crack Pandora's box; they yanked the lid open and threw it away.

And if it's not political correctness, was it greed? Try convincing anyone in the sporting world you didn't have that upcoming $800,000 payment to Coach Leach in the back of your mind.

If so, good luck finding your next coach.

And if not political correctness or greed was it pressure from the James Family and their ESPN buddies?

If so, good luck finding your next coach.

Or if it was just political correctness, with the school wanting to prove that it's all about the athletes and students first. If that was the case, good luck finding a new coach, especially one that's worth a darn.

Hey, wait; if you have strip bars at Lubbock, you could always give Mike Price a call.
