Bears 2010: Is Their Offense Real?

Dustin BrownDec 29, 2009

First off,I would like to answer some Bears' fans questioning of Devin Hester.

Theres no doubt about it,Devin Hester, the Bears' currently injured starting Wide-out,is arguably one of the fastest players in the NFL presently.

The 27-year-old was keeping pace with Cardinals' Receiver Larry Fitzgerald in receptions early in the season, and maintained a steady amount of grabs throughout the season.

The Miami star had 54 catches, and 682 yards with an average of 12.6 yards per reception in his first year of taking the reins as the Bears' 1st string Wide-out.

My proposed question is : Will the speedy Devin Hester start next year?

Looking at last night's game vs. Minnesota, our offense looked like it finally came together. That said,Hester has been making major strides at the position, and looked to have good hands and body control while going up for catches.

Hester will likely start if we don't get a big receiver acquisition in the off-season. I am impressed with our young group we have now. I know they will blossom throughout playing time.

Some people have the theory that fulfilling a receiver spot for Hester takes away from his big time returning abilities and we need his returns more than him receiving.

The truth is,Hester has not the blocking for punts like he used to. You should notice how most of the time, the opposing team are waiting for the returner to field the ball to tackle them when the returner is about to catch it.

Hester is still a great returner, and we should put him as a kickoff returner.

But,Johnny Knox is equally as fast with a little less agility compared to Hester, but Knox can field punts so that Hester doesn't get hurt. Hester could become a huge target for Cutler as corners know not to press cover him on some occasions.

Danieal Manning, who has become a better safety over the years, can absolutely handle the kickoff return duties just as easily.

My point is,Hester will start on one condition ; We don't sign a big time receiver.

Our defense needs to be our main focus right now as they are getting older. Nathan Vasher should be starting in front of Zackary Bowman at corner, and Bowman should take over for "Peanut" Tillman when he is past his expiration date.

Ron Turner,Bears' offensive coordinator, made some great calls in last nights win over the Vikings. I was very impressed with the calls, especially how he rolled Cutler out of the pocket on numerous occasions. If he could maintain that, our offense could be fine and we could win much more games if we had a defense to keep us in the game.

That brings me to another point.

I have to give credit to where it's due,and in this article,it goes to the Bears' offensive line, who has been playing very poorly all year. They gave Cutler time in the pocket, and Jay made some great throws.

If we could maintain the offensive line consistently to give Cutler time in the pocket,we will be a good offense. Forte will make plays regardless,as he's getting better with his vision.

Whatever happens,I pray that whoever the coaching staff in 2010 is,to maintain the level of play we saw on our offense this Monday.
